Our vendor and supplier mapping project illustrates the biopharmaceutical industry's investment in our state economies and in the health of the patients we serve.
IL at a Glance
We Work For Health Illinois is home to one of America’s strongest biopharmaceutical clusters hosting the largest concentration of biopharmaceutical companies outside of the Pennsylvania/New Jersey region. Illinois is home to 3,572 biotech companies, with the largest sector being in drugs and pharmaceuticals.
Robin Madsen is exhausted from her ongoing battle with breast cancer.
"I wouldn't want to drive in the condition I'm in," admitted the Elgin resident.
Thanks to the American Cancer Society's "Road to Recovery" program, she doesn't have to. The program's volunteer drivers transport Madsen -- and hundreds of other Chicago-area patients who can't drive themselves -- to chemotherapy appointments.
Horizon Pharma, a drug maker specializing in treatments for rare diseases, just opened its new U.S. headquarters in Lake Forest, Illinois. The new offices will help the growing company accommodate hundreds of additional employees.
That's great news for Illinois workers and the state economy. It's also testimony to a policy environment that has made Illinois and the United States a world-class hub of research and development into the next generation of life-saving medicines.
Illinois Comptroller Judy Baar Topinka recently addressed the state's poor business climate with blunt words: "Why would any business executive seriously consider coming to Illinois?" Indeed, Illinois was just ranked the third-worst state for business. We are saddled with the country's second-highest unemployment rate.
To turn our economy around, state leaders must support industries capable of long-term growth. Illinois' already impressive biopharmaceutical sector has the potential to create thousands of jobs and generate economic prosperity. But to secure our place as a bioscience hub, state leaders must reject policies that threaten medical innovation.
